Emergency Room in Nicosia: Which A&E to Go To (Adults, Children, GeSY)
07 Nov 2026
The A&E departments in Nicosia that work with GeSY, including the children's A&E, what to bring, and when a personal doctor or duty pharmacy is the better first stop.
In a life-threatening emergency, call 112 (or 199) for an ambulance. Chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of a stroke, heavy bleeding or a seriously injured or unwell child: do not drive around looking for the shortest queue.
Nicosia has the only emergency department for children in GeSY (ΓεΣΥ, the national health system), and a private A&E inside GeSY as well. Knowing which door to go to saves time when it matters.
The A&E departments in Nicosia that work with GeSY
According to GeSY's official provider search (checked in October 2026), these Accident & Emergency departments in Nicosia are contracted with GeSY:
| A&E department | Who it is for | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Nicosia General Hospital | Adults | Public (state hospitals, OKYpY), Strovolos |
| Children's A&E at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital | Children | Public (OKYpY), Strovolos |
| Apollonion Private Hospital | Adults and children | Private hospital, Strovolos |
Nicosia General Hospital switchboard: +357 22 603000. For Apollonion, use the phone number on its website.
The list changes from time to time. You can confirm it on the GeSY provider search: choose Healthcare Service Providers, then the category Accident & Emergency Department.
With a child
For an injured or very unwell child, the children's A&E is the place with paediatric staff around the clock. For a fever or a minor illness, call your child's personal doctor (paediatrician) first: paediatricians in Nicosia.
Public or private: what changes with GeSY
If you are a GeSY beneficiary, a GeSY-contracted A&E works under GeSY whether the hospital is public or private. You do not need a referral for A&E, and a small co-payment may apply (ask at reception or the GeSY contact centre, 17000).
At reception, say "I am a GeSY beneficiary" and show your ID or residence card. At a private hospital, ask before any test or treatment whether it is covered by GeSY or charged privately.
Visiting from another EU country? Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and ask at reception how it applies.
